Frequently Asked Questions

Below are a few of our frequently asked questions. If your question is not addressed in full, please feel free to reach out to us by phone (616) 233-0884 or use our contact form provided here.

  • How much do classes and support groups cost per session?

Classes and support groups are completely free. Although they typically run 6 weeks in a row, we encourage you to enroll at any time, if you are interested.

  • How do I get to and from my classes?

Public transportation is available from the greater Grand Rapids area to our office via bus. Many of our students take the Rapid transit system to get back and forth from classes. If the cost of transportation is a barrier, we help subsidize the cost of bus rides up to $1.75.

  • How do I qualify for classes and/or support groups?

Anyone interested in our courses and support groups are welcome. Recovery Academy is for everyone undergoing personal recovery. Enrolling in a course is as simple as arriving 15 minutes beforehand and filling out a demographics form and very brief survey.

  • Do I need a referral to attend classes?

No, anyone is free to attend. We also encourage you to spread the word, as most people hear about our services through word-of-mouth and personal recommendations.

  • How many classes can I attend at a given time?

You are free to enroll in as many courses as you feel you need at a given time. The average student takes around 3 courses at a time, although we certainly have students who take many more classes or only one class.

  • What if I miss one or more classes?

We understand that everyone has unique circumstances and can commit at different levels. All students may join at any time during the 6-week long courses. Taking the entire course is beneficial, but even one class can lead to a meaningful change in your life. Enrolling is as easy as showing up for the class and a answering a few brief questions.

  • How do I get one-on-one mentoring or coaching?

Mentoring is an important part of the recovery process–both for the mentees and the mentors. At Recovery Academy, we believe in organic and real mentorships among peers and students and staff. If you are interested in being a mentor or getting mentored, feel free to stop by Mike’s office. His door is always open.

  • What can I expect from a class?

Classes typically range in size from 6-15 people. They run for about 6 weeks for an hour and a half each week. We offer a variety of recurring classes that can be found in the “Classes” section of our website. Students can begin a course at any time and each class is lead by a Peer Support Specialist at our center.

If you successfully attend 4 out of 6 classes in a specific course, we will offer you an official certificate of completion. This is an honor among our students, and many get their certificates framed.

  • What can I expect from a support group?

The sizes of our support groups vary from group-to-group and week-to-week. It is an opportunity to openly share what is going on in your life as well as to support other people who may be going through difficult times. A variety of support groups are offered every week on an ongoing basis. Please see the “Support Groups” section of our website for more details.

  • Is there a limit on how many classes I can take?

There is no limit on the number of classes that you may enroll in. We have had students who have participated consistently since our opening in 2008.

  • How long does it take to graduate from Recovery Academy?

At Recovery Academy, students measure their own progress and success. We are here to support you on your personal journey to recovery and fulfillment. We have many returning students who attend classes regularly as well as those who return from time to time to say “hello.” We also are here for our students through relapses and difficult times–Recovery Academy seeks to provide students with the support and training necessary for you to continue in the recovery process and gain a strong sense of personal achievement.
